Mexico. BASF in alliance with Grupo Bimbo, Café Punta del Cielo and Compospack created Compósta·me, an initiative that seeks to promote the production of compost as an alternative to the management of organic and plastic waste generated in the City. This initiative is implemented in the compost plant of the Bosque de San Juan de Aragón.

Waste management is a priority in Mexico, its high generation and the capacity for its use have been a relevant issue in recent years. According to data from the Solid Waste Inventory of Mexico City 2019, only in the capital of the country we generate 13,149 tons per day, of which only 36% was managed for recycling, treatment or use; 62% were sent to landfills or final disposal sites while the rest remained in the environment, generating greenhouse gases and risks to human health.

According to BASF, "this has articulated great efforts to legislate, regulate and act in favor of the environment. For its part, private industry is also working on the development and implementation of increasingly environmentally friendly technologies."

BASF, Bimbo, Café Punta del Cielo and Compospack have begun to innovate packaging with more sustainable technologies, and today they join forces with the Forest of San Juan de Aragón to develop an educational exercise, which seeks to explain the problem and promote good practices for the use of waste generated at home as well as raise awareness about it, participatory by inviting the community to be part of the change by separating domestic organic waste, demonstrating the environmental and waste management benefits of a shared responsibility between industry (producers of consumer goods), population (consumers and waste generators) and authorities (public garbage collection service and industrial composting sites); and identification, by publicizing consumer products that offer compostable alternatives. The exercise combines the proper management of organic solid waste with certified compostable technologies.

The company also emphasized that the process will be executed as follows: "On Saturdays 8, 15 and 22 January, these activities will be developed, among which the gift of compostable bags made with BASF ecovío stand out so that visitors to the Forest who want to participate incorporate organic waste such as fruit and vegetable remains in order to produce compost from these in the plant located within this area of environmental value. The compost generated will be used as a nutrient to improve the soil quality of its green areas."

It is worth noting that ecocraft is a BIOCOMPOSTABLE PLASTIC FROM BASF FROM WHICH VARIOUS APPLICATIONS SUCH AS PACKAGING, BAGS AND SUSTAINABLE PLASTIC ITEMS CAN BE PRODUCED. These products biodegrade in approximately 90 days in a suitable industrial compost environment.
