Colombia. The company Torna works to end water pollution, caused by the improper disposal of used cooking oil.

Her story begins in 2019, when Daniela Carvajal Molina returned to Colombia after studying industrial design at the University of Buenos Aires and decided to found a factory of artisanal soaps for sale in small stores.

Subsequently, the businesswoman wanted to go further in her purpose of creating value from waste elements. Thus, an organization that introduced an innovative concept in the cleaning industry by specializing in the manufacture of biodegradable products whose raw material is used cooking oil, considered the largest polluter of wastewater in the world.

Torna's vision is clear: they want to save the water. To do this, they market their own products and manufacture customized products, under the maquila model, for other companies. Its more than seven years of experience endorse its work, as well as the quality certificates obtained for its products, making it the first Latin American company of its kind.

What problems do you seek to solve?

Of all the environmental problems, one of the most alarming is water pollution through cooking oil from our homes and restaurants. In Colombia alone, around 162 million liters of oil are consumed annually in homes, of which 35% ends up in the drain. "These figures are very high and we are very worried, that is why we want to be an impact company; we dream of multiplying Calo Jabones cells in different territories of Colombia, providing alternatives to the care of our waters and generating employment in different areas of the country. Through the sale of our products, we want to promote responsible consumption practices and in turn, socially, environmentally and economically impact the territories where the local management cells of Used Cooking Oil (ACU) arrive," says the company.

It is worth noting that the company provides the service of COLLECTION OF USED COOKING OIL nationwide. For medium and large generators, "we pay for this waste with cleaning products for their industrial kitchens and impact indicators that they can show to their customers. We are in charge of measuring and disseminating the direct impact generated with our partner companies," the organization argues.

"We take the used oil to our plant, filter it and TURN IT INTO ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CLEANING PRODUCTS. Don't worry, there are no bad smells or traces of oil, that's the magic of chemistry. We have laboratory studies that support the biodegradability of our products and their effectiveness."

Additionally, with the social program "Save Water to Study", they include young people from marginalized sectors of the city of Bogotá. "We actively involve them in all stages of our process, from the collection of the oil to the manufacture of our soaps. Thus, through their commitment and the sale of each TORNA product, we collaborate in the financing of their higher education," says the Torna company.
