Researchers from the University Hospital of Nice and the Institut hospitalo-universitaire (IHU) Méditerranée Infection de Marseille have carried out a study on the effectiveness of household cleaning products sold to kill bed bugs. They have found one, which in addition to being natural, helps to combat these insects.

"We tested several types of powders, such as green clay, baking soda, talc, diatomaceous earth or sommières earth, and the results show that the latter can kill bed bugs in 24 hours," the parasitologist and medical entomologist at the University of Nice, Pascal Delaunay, told the French media AFP. who has been in charge of this study for a year and a half together with his colleague Jean-Michel Berenger, a member of the IHU in Marseille and founder of the National Institute for the Study and Control of Bed Bugs (INELP).

"In addition to a short-term effect, since a simple exposure of three minutes is enough to kill bed bugs, we have also demonstrated a non-repellent effect, unlike chemical insecticides, and a transversal effect, that is, "a contaminated bed bug also contaminates its companions and kills them," Pascal Delaunay has qualified in his statements. The expert has recommended that, in case of infestation, this clay be spread over the bed bases, while using the usual cleaning processes of this insect, including washing clothes at 60 degrees.

Originating from the Sommières region of southern France, Terres de Sommières is a product that is extracted directly from quarries and ground to obtain a clay similar to the texture of talc.
